Keith's Random Thoughts

I was tested for allergies yesterday. To sum up the results, I'm allergic to almost everything the good Lord has made, except rabbits. Trees, molds, weeds, grass—you name it, my body doesn't like it. (And by 'doesn't like it', I mean it really doesn't like it, and that was the longest 15 minutes of my life. It felt like someone was making S'mores on my back, only I didn't get to eat any.)
Now, I never would have expected such drastic results. I have allergies, but I didn't realize it was that serious. It was a bit of a surprise.

But isn't life like that? Ministry, too—we never suspect something, and then, all of a sudden, something happens that teaches us something about ourselves. We learn that we have resources deep inside of us, gifts we never knew about, until they are revealed to us. We learn that God spent years, decades, preparing us for some task, and we never suspected that God was at work.
Friends, be patient with God. Trust in him. Wait on him. Be still before him. While God is at work within your lives, God is also doing things that you can't see, that you don't recognize, that you won't understand until many years down the road. It will all be clear then, but just because it isn't clear now doesn't mean that God isn't at work. God loves you and has plans to use you for his kingdom.

Trust God.

Text for this Sunday
1 Kings 19:9b-18

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’
Elijah Meets God at Horeb

He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.
When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’
Then the Lord said to him, ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.’
