Random Thoughts
Not
too many random thoughts today. I've spent most of it in the car.
The most pressing thought I've had recently is a recognition that I'm
asking the wrong question. I always want to know if I'm good
enough... I long to honor God with my life, but when I focus on
knowing whether or not I'm good enough, I've got the binoculars
turned around the wrong way. I'm trying to honor God by staring at
myself.
The
answer to “Am I good enough?” is always no. Our model is Jesus
Christ. None of us measure up to him.
Thankfully,
we don't have to be good enough. Jesus Christ was. He was good
enough, he was worthy, and he stood in our place and took our
punishment. The question we need to ask is, “Am I willing to
accept his grace and trust in his love, that his strength will be
sufficient, or will I keep trying to do it on my own to 'prove' to
God that I'm a good disciple?” That's often what we're trying to
do, but God doesn't need us to earn our way into his love. He wants
us to accept his love as the unconditional gift that it is, and once
we've done that we're free to let it transform us. But we have to
let God do the work, rather than try and do it on our own.
It's
not easy. But it's incredibly freeing. Thanks be to God.

Matthew
16:13-20
(ESV)
13
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked
his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And
they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and
others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But
who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him,
“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not
revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell
you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the
gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the
keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall
be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed
in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no
one that he was the Christ.
