2 week doctor check-up

So Moonlight Graham couldn't be our doctor, but we found a pretty good second choice. We took Caleb to see Dr. Wiley this morning for his two week checkup. (Two weeks! Can you believe it?) They said everything looks great--he's up to 8 lbs, 1 oz., so he's now at least more than half as big as the cats. He's still fussing some, but now that Carson Palmer has been traded that will probably fade away.

One of the big things we wanted to talk with the doctor about was schedules. There are so many different opinions on this it's hard to know what to do, especially when authors try to make someone feel guilty for not choosing their method. Rachel's a great mom, and she doesn't need some author telling her otherwise just because she's trying to do her best. Anyway, the doctor said that a schedule is only best during the day--that we want him to sleep as much as possible at night. If he can sleep for 4 or 5 hours at night, then we should let him do that, but that during the day he needs to be eating every 3 hours, or more often, to get him used to being up and active during the day.

It's hard to believe that all of the training for life starts so early! It seems like he should get a grace period of a year or so to adjust to being outside of the womb, but life is one big learning curve. You never stop learning, from the day you're born, and the best we can do is try and pick up every piece of information possible in the hopes that it will prove useful. Let's hope Caleb picks up on that sleeping-through-the-night piece pretty early!
