Some people are morning people. For others, there is coffee and all sorts of variations on the alarm clock to help rouse them from bed. While alarm clocks are a relatively recent invention, coffee has been consumed for at least the last 500 years, if not longer.
And yet, given the right motivation, all people will rise early. We were having this conversation as a family the other day -- debating what types of things the non-morning people among us would get up early for. Flights to vacation and large cash prizes were deemed sufficient motivators to rise early in the morning.
While the people of the 1st century likely didn't have as many distractions as we did, they were busy people, and so to disrupt their schedule to go hear Jesus would have entailed a sacrifice. But they still went -- they were compelled to hear what he had to say.
You don't even need to leave the house to hear the words of Jesus. In today's world, you don't even need to get out of bed! You can read and listen to the Word of God from the comfort of your bed. Is there a better way to start the day? I cannot think of one.
