The Passover is a season of deliverance, a celebration of freedom, and in the heart of it, Satan enters into Judas and tempts him to betray Jesus. In doing so, he gives up his freedom and binds himself to sin and brokenness, shattering the community of believers through his act of betrayal. For a price, he gave up his friend.
Satan tempts us all. We can be in the midst of celebrations, and Satan is there, like a lion, waiting to devour us. Our hearts are drawn towards the beautiful and pleasurable things of this world, and we sway towards them, perhaps slowly at first, thinking that we can resist. We give a little bit of our hearts and think that we're still in control.
The Gospel calls us to humility and shows us Judas for a reason -- we are all tempted, and we can all fall like Judas does. May we pay attention to know what our weakness is, to know what our price is, and pray for strength and a community that helps us resist when Satan tempts us.
