Devotional--Plans, Part I

Jeremiah 29.11-14

11For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 12Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. 13When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, 14I will let you find me, says the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

What's your plan?  For today?  For the next week?  For the next five years?

We may not have it written down on paper, but I imagine that each of us, at some point, has thought or dreamed about what the next period of our life may look like.  I wonder if we've made seeking the Lord with all of our heart the top priority in our plans.  I wonder if we recognize that the Lord has a plan for us, and that when we seek the Lord we draw nearer to that plan, for the abundant life we find in Christ is better than the one we can build on our own.

As we grow in faith, we're better able to distinguish what good decisions are for our future.  For example, when we have a healthy view of money, we won't pursue fruitless and exhausting financial ends merely for the sake of growing rich.  When we love our neighbor, we will make decisions that promote good for the entire community, not simply ourselves.  When we see ourselves as a beloved child of God, we make decisions that are healthy for us, rather than wearing us down.

So I pray that our plans for the future include drawing closer to the Lord, that we may hear his voice calling us to a future with hope, that we may thrive as we become the people God longs for us to be, that we may find the peace of Christ in all things we do.

Blessings
