1 Peter 1:13-21

1 Peter 1:13-21
English Standard Version

  What's your worth?
Something's worth is traditionally determined by how much someone is willing to pay for it.  Here's a visual image for you -- imagine that you're caught and held captive by a hideous villain who wants nothing other than to destroy you.  This villain is unsure of your ransom, for it is undetermined how much you are worth.  In your mind, you wonder if a chest filled with the most expensive and valuable gems would be enough for the villain to release you.
But in the end, something of far greater value is offered to release you from captivity.  You'd have thought an endless amount of gems would have been enough, but God has a higher opinion of your value.  To God, you are worth the precious blood of Christ, blood that didn't need to be shed, blood that is given freely out of love for you.  Christ has existed since the beginning of time, and deserves nothing but honor, but accepts punishment and death because of God's love for you.
To God, you are worth this, and the price is paid freely.
That should make you feel pretty good about yourself, right?
