I remember hearing a driving tip that if the car is sliding, you're supposed to look where you want to go, because that's where you'll steer the car, rather than looking at the obstacle you want to avoid. This sounds like a great idea until the car is actually sliding and you panic and stare and what you're sliding into. Easier said than done.
The same is true for each of us. When we panic, we forget about carefully thought-out strategies. We stare at the obstacle in front of us and we freeze.
What the Psalms teach us is that when we enter into rhythms of life, daily prayer instructs us to look to Jesus constantly, because then the rhythms and habits are ingrained into us. Then we're already accustomed to looking to Jesus, so when disaster strikes, it's not something new we're trying to do, but rather a continuation of looking to God, who will answer us and deliver us.
